Flu Going Round? I've researched ways to avoid it!!

Ok- so everyone knows about the evil Swine Flu that has infected the majority of the world at some point this winter... But this isn't about that- nor the doom and gloom it has brought us all. It's about how to avoid the normal, everyday Cold and Flu's so your life can go on as normal these last few months of winter without feeling like POO! (I may have taken advise from the God that is google!- they are all #linked)

1. Avoid Sugar!- it is proven to weaken or stress your immune sysytem and bacteria thrives on it!!

2. Drink lots of fluids and avoid fizzy drinks and excessive alcohol- This one is pretty obvious, but so many people think they can get away with it but have you ever had what seems to be a week long hangover? Turns out, it's probably a 'come and go' cold you've contracted from where ever you were in your drunken state and the alcohol in your system has just helped it thrive.

3. Vitamin C and D foods and suplements- These Vitamins are great for fighting and preventing colds and flu! Foods such as fish, chestnuts, yogurt, beef liver and egg for Vitamin D and most friuts and veggies such as red peppers, strawberries, oranges, brussle sproats, brocolli, grapefruit.

4. Kissing! - I know this sounds completely ridiculous but it has been proven that kissing strengthens your immune system by the passing of bacteria... Gross explination I know but if it means you can get out there and have fun (not too much mind!) then why not?! However, this doesn't mean you can kiss anyone whether ill or not, I'm sure a un-infected person will benefit you much more!!

Hope you all have a lush Spring with no Flu!

HALF TERM!

Oh wow! Talk about the most amazing half term ever! So good, I just had to share it with the world!!

SATURDAY:
There's nothing like a civilised coffee with a the girls before a troop around the shops - I have two friends from Hereford for the week so I've been running round like a headless chicken trying to sort everything out and getting plenty of early nights to ensure I'm fit as a fiddle! (Theme of the day: Paramore, Misguided Ghosts)

SUNDAY:
Wow- where has the week gone? Can't believe I'm already at the train station picking up by two bestest buddies who have come down from Hereford for the week! We have sooo much planned, I just hope it all goes well because there seems to be a lot of accidental pressure for this to be an AMAZING half term- probably most of it created by me to be fair hahaha! (Theme of the day: Paolo Nutini, 10/10)

MONDAY:
What's better after a long, stressful journey (on my visitors behalf) and a week of planning to perfection (on my behalf) than a lovely coffee in Costa with a few mutual friends? Just to start off the week and ease ourselves into the madness!
It's so lovely them being here and it's going to be a GREAT week! (Theme of the day: Olly Murs, Thinking of Me)

TUESDAY:
Today is a major social day! All of our friends have got together in town and we've sat in a local coffee shop for two hours having a big catch up and finalising important Saturday night plans (all will become clear)! After being kicked out of the coffee shop for staying too long after finishing our coffee's we head down to costa as it's started raining, which is dreadful for a day when we're suppose to be wondering round the shops and local places to go. We make a day of it anyhow, stopping off in New Look very quickly (mainly because the boys started moaning) for a peek around for ideas for Saturday night outfits! (Theme of the day: Vampire Weekend, Holiday)

WEDNESDAY:
Today should really be written off as a wasted day in our busy schedule- my male visitor, Kieran, must of been in hell as all we (my other visitor and closest friend, Jess and I) decided to sit around all day, gossip, sleep and do the occassional beauty regime that kept us looking beautiful! We have a busy next few days planned before they leave so we don't want to be turning up looking like nackered old tramps when we're suppose to be babes or whatever else haha!
To make up for our boring day we (Jess and I, as she has visited before) took Kieran down to a little beach of beauty called Cot Valley- a lovely walk with astounding views! But because it was so dark when we got down there and truly awful weather, there was nothing to be seen!! Must return on another day when we're not too busy and find him a rock to take home (it's a tradition for those who stay at my house from elsewhere in England as the rocks at Cot Valley look like dinosour eggs!)

Kieran and Jess!

Kieran, Myself and Jess!
We did however, get some photo's of our little walk which, unfortunatly, I look awful in them as most of you will know, rain doesn't agree so much with hair or make up- but that's life for you!
(Theme of the day: Nickleback, Photograph)
THURSDAY:
Today required a good old fashioned "shop-a-thon". We took the train to Plymouth and managed to shop non-stop (well, a half hour coffee and lunch break) from 11:00am - 5:30pm! The funniest thing was, I truly think Kieran bought more clothes over all than Jess and I put together!! An astonishing achievement for mere male kind! It was a great day over all, although unfortunatly missed out on going to Plymouth Hoe and the other shops outside Drake Circus as we were so engrosed in the manic need to find bargin outfits! (Theme of the day: Kings of Leon, Notion)

FRIDAY:
Since Jess and Kieran are enevitably, tourists; we thought we'd have a tourist day and take them both to the Eden Project to have a look around and go ice skating. We had a great day and the rain deffinatly didnt stop us having fun!

Don't worry Kieran, that is just
Lipstick round Jess's mouth I'm sure-
Not blood!

It was Kieran's first time ice skating so it was always bound to be a laugh- little did we know he was going to do an ice skaters inpression of the running man, flip over and face plant the ice in a spectacular fashion within 10 minutes of getting on the ice. Luckily no harm done so it was the strict "langh first, help later" plan that usually follows an epic fall anywhere, let alone on ice! Bless his cottons! (Theme of the day: Scouting For Girls, On the Radio!)

SATURDAY:
Lush weather today! It's so nice that the sun is finally coming out! It'dstaken long enough! We all went down Cot Valley (the closest beach to where I live) with a tag along or two in the form of my sister and her dog! Took some great photo's while Jess and my sister did girly paddling/getting apsolutly soaked! While Kieran went manly rock climbing- and nearly got stuck! Failure! But such fun all the same! One must keep pinching one's self to make sure this isn't all a dream because it has truly been the most amazing week and I'm truly gutted that Kieran and Jess are going back to their homeland, Herefordshire TOMORROW!
The night really topped it all off, put the cherry on the cake, the icing on the bun, the..... Oh, I'm feeling a bit peckish now! Any how, it was amazing! St Ives in Cornwall has just recently opened up a youth centre for teenagers and various events called the Island Cantre; and tonight it held the second Island Centre Gig! Local bands from around the Mounts Bay area perform sets over the night while the rest of us rave- rather basic, but you know what they say about fun.... It's created from the simplest idea!
We (Kieran, Jess and I) caught the train up with several others and from then on, went rather wild. As all gigs do, The Island Centre Gig took a while to get going, but once The Payne Killers (The lead singer being a friend of mine) started their set, everyone got up and started dancing!
Gary and the Minefield, however, caused utter mayhem! I have mentioned them before in an ealier post but this set was something else on earth!
Unfortunatly we missed Shade of Red (who I have also mentioned before) because we had to catch the train! Such a shame as I heard from my friends who stayed behind that they were amazing (and even had a stage dive rom the guitarist, Elliot)!! But lets not dwell on the negative; the positive is that it was an amazing night and 100% the perfect way to top off the whole week. We (meaning the whole group of us) had fun with no boundries and it really was one of those nights I will hold closely forever.

This idea of this half term was to start off the Summer. Okay, so it's still raining and not even Spring yet, but what with this year containing exams so lots of staying inside, we need to start early!! From now I have so much to look forward to in the next coming weeks and months which I will ofcourse blog about!
Lovinglife <3

Bright Young Things 2011!

Bright Young Things is a great opportunity for bands and young exhibitionists to get involved and showcase their work or themselves in various different ways. I attended the event as part of my school and got the chance to watch and interview the following three performer’s in-between enjoying the photography exhibitions and the attractions of the Eden Project where the event was held.
While the exhibitions were held in The Core (the newest development of the Eden Project that was built around a specially sculptured “Core” from one solid piece of granite) the gigs were held in the Mediterranean Biome, which made it seem like a beautiful summers day, so good news all round!

Shade of Red-
A local indie rock band based in St Ives; influenced by gypsy, polka, funk, folk, punk, dance, ska, and alt-rock music. They have a very new, fresh a different sound and their use of the melodica wind piano adds a unique element to their music. Their song Kites, for me, sums up the whole sound of summer and has an almost ‘Vampire Weekend’ sound to it. They describe their sound as “frunky”- which I think sums it up perfectly.
They consist of Dani Smith; the leader of the band, Elliot Benjamin; the guitarist, Isaac Watkins; the bassist, Fred Williams; who plays various different instruments including the amazing melodica and Josh Benjamin; the drummer.
Do you have any musical influences?
Dani: “Umm… Yeah, all over the place really; we’re into Reggae, Punk and things like that”
What’s your favourite band at the moment?
Dani + Isaac: “Radio Heads”
How did this gig compare to other gigs you’ve done?
Josh: “I’d say it was our best gig yet!"
Dani: "We’ve kind of moved away from some of our old stuff”
Did you feel there were any issues with the sound that you need to sort out or was it all pretty good?
Isaac: “I don’t know really- at some points I thought I couldn’t hear myself but apparently I was quite load!”
Fan/Friend of the band: “All I could hear was the bass at the end of some songs so maybe, yeah.”
Isaac: "Thats all you need to hear!" [of course, you have to say that!]
Looking forward to more events over the course of the year! You boys deffinatly have a new fan!!!
(if you want to check out the band and listen to some tunes, heres their website: http://www.shadeofred.co.uk/)

The Signs
Signs are a band put together by the Mixx scheme and have been together since winter 2009. They are an Alternative/ Alternative Rock/ Indie band with a great festival sound. The members consist of Jai New and Emily Walker; both guitarists, Georgia Ellery; lead singer, and Cadan Palfreemen; Drummer. We (my school friends and I) interveiwed Georgia, the lead, after their amazing performance at Eden:
So what influences you as a band?
"Well, many bands. But also, just people really"
Thats very... deep of you.
How did this gig compare to other gigs that you've done?
"It's very nice doing it in an environment like this; makes it all much more relaxed and easier to concentrate on your vocals and general performance"
The Signs-
Georgia, the lead
Jai, the guitarist
Cadan, the drummer
What inspired you to become a band in the first place?
"It was Luke [head of the band Mixx at our school] i suppose. We all turned up for the club and here we are now. He organised everything and I think he made us."
Thankyou for talking to us, you were great today!
Also to conclude, The Signs will not be going their separate ways anytime soon, on the contary to recent rumours, but are taking a break from the band so watch this space; and if you like them then you can look them up on their website: http://www.reverbnation.com/thesignsmbs

Gary and the Minefield
Gary and the Minefield had a great Artic Monkeys sound and really created a great 'get-up-and-dance' atmosphere. Based in Penzance, this Indie/Rock band were formed in 2009 and last year performed at the Port Elliot Festival and Party in the Park; which was a great success. They are currently recording their E.P, called 'Many Different Flavours'.
They consist of Jack BK; lead singer and guitarist, James Bolitho; bassist and backing vocalist, Mat Lester; Drummer, and Ronan Hicks; Guitarist. My friend and I got to talk to Jack and Ronan after their set at Eden:-
What bands influence you?
Jack: "Artic Monkeys.... and Franz Ferdinand"
Ahh... You can really notice that in you music.
What did you think of the other bands that played here today?
Jack: "I thought the other bands performing today were very good"
Have you got a particular favourite?
Jack: "Probably Shade of Red [see above] we know them quite well"
They were all very good!
Ronan: "Yes they were all very good"
How did this gig go for you? How did it compare to others?
Ronan: "OK, it was OK"
Jack: "Yeah, it was OK. i mean the venue was brillian but we just went out of tune a bit, i think"
Ronan: "A little bit cold!"
We thought you were good- just like you were in the skeleton suits [reffering to The Ritz gig a few months back]
Jack: "Oh yeah! Oh brilliant, thank you very much"
So any plans for the summer? Any gigs coming up?
Your welcome!
Jack: "Umm, yeah- hopefully Boardmasters [Newquay], Party in the Park, Lafrowda- all of them"
Ronan: "Yes, Lafrowda's really good"
Whats the best gig you've ever done?
Ronan: "Well if we don't say here where in trouble!!"
Jack: "Yeah! [laughs] But Party in the Park was pretty good"
Ronan: "Yeah, Party in the Park was really fun! I think we were the only band in the acoustic tent to have to bring security in!"
Oh wow!
Ronan: "Yeah, we'll take all the credit for that!"
Bit like celebrities already!
Jack: "Well, s'pose!"
Well, cheers for letting us interview you! You were so great today!
Jack + Ronan: "Cheers, and no problem"
Gary and the Minefield have got two gigs coming up in February, see their myspace site (http://www.myspace.com/garyandtheminefield) or join their (or any of the other bands) group on Facebook.

                               ______________________________________

Over all the gig was amazing and such fun! It is a great opportunity for young bands and performers and most importantly, an amazing show for the fans!! Small gigs like this is the best way for unsigned bands to self-promote themselves and hopefully get signed at one point! I'm sure everyone who went will agree it was an amazing experience and just want to say a HUGE thankyou to the bands who put a pause on their hectic preperation to have a chat with me and "the crew"!!

My Introduction to Fellow Bloggers

Ok, so in my weird and wonderful world, New Year’s doesn’t start until February; post overcoming the trauma of the previous year and the inevitable ‘New Year’s Blues’ that we all face.

After conquering my mock GCSE’s and handing in my application to my chosen college for my chosen A-level courses, the year can officially begin and what a year it’s looking to be, I can hardly contain my excitement!
The year may seem to be off to a slow start and stress may already be tugging at the bags under my eyes but I remain positive that the plans made for over February should start my social ball rolling!!

As one of my New Year’s resolutions is to do something worthwhile every month, I’m using January as a chance to start my blog; that will hopefully pose as interest to people and possible colleges and universities (when that time comes).
I enjoy writing and wish to become an events/fashion journalist in the future after taking English in both college and university; so any comments or constructive criticism would be GREAT!

February’s ‘something worthwhile’ is to make a perfect host of myself as two close friends are visiting over February half term (25th February- 7th March) from Herefordshire. They visit every year but often at different times so having them both stay in my pokey room will be quite a challenge but hopefully a lot of fun. Also, for me and millions of other teenagers in my position it’s also the month for sorting out college applications and sitting mocks for reasons that still baffle my friends and I.
Of course, February for many of you is the month of love, so I wish you all in advance a Happy Valentine’s Day!

March brings my first ever concert which I am very excited about. I am going to see The Script perform at Plymouth with my good friend. They’re currently on their “Science and Faith” tour, which I have learned all the words to in preparation for a good old sing-a-long! I’ve never heard them perform live on television or on the radio so it will be interesting to see if Danny O'Donaghue really is the smooth voiced, ‘dream-boat’ we all think he is. After all, it’s well known that some singers are proven better on record than live.

I'm planning on flourishing like a rose!

Like many people around the country, April is the time for finalising festival plans and getting together a summer wardrobe for all those events and special summer occasions!
Being a bit different is always important and as the seasonal jobs start to hire around Easter, which generally funds my clothing and activities through the summer. My ‘Something Worthwhile’ is to redefine my independents with this new income; as like many people I know, I’ve to rely heavily on my family this winter and, as I do every year, regret not saving some money from last summer; I’ll have to try better next time!

Run To The Sun

May is exam month! So my ‘Something Worthwhile’ is inevitably to concentrate on that and revise; how is it worthwhile? Well although ‘fun’ doesn’t come into the equation, results do and Radio 1 will be playing out the tunes to get the country motivated for this marathon!

Marilyn in THAT dress

BUT! All work and no play made a girl one bored chick so I’m hoping to make it up to Newquay for the ‘Run to the Sun’ in the half term to catch a tan, check out the awesome VW campers and take photos of the scene. (Of course I will be reporting on it all and blogging it!)
There’s also a private party happening at a local restaurant with the theme of “At the Movies” that I will be attending as the gorgeous Marilyn Monroe with my new ‘do’ and a white pleated dress to mimic her in the movie “The Seven Year Itch”.

Maizy Day, Golowan
Market Jew Street in Penzance, Cornwall

It all kicks off in June; not even mentioning my 16th Birthday!!! This month hosts local festivals such as Lafrowda and Golowan which is a must-attend as far as I’m concerned. So, in connection to all these events, my ‘Something Worthwhile’ is to report on all the events I go to and use my new professional camera as much as possible (although I’ve made note to do that every month).
Golowan is such a lovely weekend event that the whole community get involved in. Parades of home-made sculptures roam up and down the main street and market stools selling everything from clothes and gifts to hair-brades and henna tattoos.

A tonne of bricks is dropped n the 1st July in the form of prom; the

Limo planned for my prom!

most important event of Secondary School, so they say. This month I will be posting a blog about all the different types of prom dresses and prom hair to get in the spirit of the event. This is also the month that thousands of year 11’s, including me, that face the end of school before the holidays that will prepare us for college. It’s such an exciting but nerve-racking time for us all as we finally realise that we’re about to grow up; grow up or fall behind, there really isn’t much choice but personally I’m feeling confident that I will settle into college just as well as my older friends did last year, and the year before that, and the year before that; works like clockwork really.

Watergate Bay, Newquay: Relentless Boardmasters
August should be, by far, the best month of the year: not only is Newquay coming alive for the AMAZING Relentless Boardmasters for the weekend; surfers and skaters will compete over the weekend for the final cash prize alongside famous bands and solo singers performing on one of the stages. It’s the event of the summer for thousands of people all over the UK and everyone’s got their fingers, toes, eyes crossed for great weather and awesome headline acts; and my ‘Something Worthwhile’? Let my hair down and PICTURES! PICTURES! PICTURES!
Oh! And wish me luck for receiving my GSCE results from school.
August will be the perfect way to end the summer before I start college and become buried in English literature & language coursework!

I hope you enjoy my forthcoming blogs about all the events I attend in Cornwall and around the UK; this was a kind of introduction to all my fellow bloggers out there and I hope you continue to read and view my Blog for as long as I continue to post them. After all, I can only get better and it would great to hear your comments below! Cheerrrrs <3

(L-R) Gabe and Jess, my friends from Herefordshire,
and myself last last summer! :D
